STORM SURGE
Hydrology Sub-Committee hydrology@hydrologicwarning.org George Smith, Coordinator
Storm surge is the excessive rise of ocean waters along a coastline caused by an approaching tropical event. Significant destruction is caused by fast-moving ocean waters that are pushed up against the coastal areas.
Significant efforts by NOAA to model and forecast potential storm surge ahead of landfall are ongoing. Additionally, the USGS has developed a quick-deployment scheme for the collection of storm surge hydrograph data.
